Chicago Public Library Teen Summer Program! June 1-September 1, 2018 Check out Imagine Doing More, a summer program challenging teens to think about how they can positively impact the quality of their Chicago environment, from June 1 to September 1, by investigating, learning and creating an action plan. This self-directed summer program also invites teens to participate in Partner Challenges with the Adler Planetarium, the Chicago Architecture Foundation, the Chicago Botanic Garden, and the Environmental Law & Policy Center. Home Page / Teen Summer Partner Organizations / Teen Titles Supporting the Doing More Program Spain Field Trip, Spring 2019, INFORMATIONAL MEETING, Wednesday, June 6 Come learn about a spectacular travel opportunity - a field trip to Spain that will take place in April 2019, most likely April 7-April 19, 2019. Following the recent successful field trip this spring to Seville, Granada, and Madrid, Spanish teacher Marcos González-Díaz is already working with tour operator Sí Spain to plan a magnificent experience for next year. Please come and bring your parents to learn more about the trip, to meet chaperones Mr. González-Díaz, Ms. Guerrero, and Mr. Feeley, and to hear from Jones students who traveled to Spain this spring. Mikva Challenge Aspen Track Winners AND Mikva Action Civics Showcase STUDENT CHOICE WINNERS! The team of Jones seniors Diego Pizano, Cain Yepez, and David Gonzalez and Victoria Soto High School senior Stefany Boyas was awarded a $1,500.00 grant by the Chicago Chapter of the Mikva Challenge and invited to give a presentation about their project at the Mikva Action Civics Showcase at the Bridgeport Arts Center on May 22 along with ten other teams. Their presentation earned the Student Choice Award! The students collaboratively founded and administered the Bridge Tutoring Program, Chicago’s largest student-run tutoring program. High school students from five Chicago high schools provide weekly tutoring to students in four elementary schools. Congratulations to the students for their far-reaching and impactful contribution to Chicago students! Click here to view the presentation video! Jones Comedy Club presents “Clothed and Afraid,” Friday, June 1, 3:30 PM, Robin Bennett Theatre Need a good laugh before finals? The Jones Comedy Club will be performing "Clothed and Afraid," an improvisational comedy show, this Friday at 3:30 PM in the Bennett Theatre. The show features fast and funny improv comedy games performed by the entire company! Tickets are $3 in advance and $4 at the door, and are available from Mr. Lyons and all members of the Comedy Club. The show will run about an hour in length. TEDx Youth Event at Jones, “Truth or Dare,” May 31, 5 PM This year’s TEDx Youth Event at Jones features five student talks. Asian-American Club Showcase: “Bloom” Friday, May 25, 6:00 PM Be sure to attend the Asian-American Club Showcase “Bloom” this Friday, May 25, at 6:00 PM. Spring Extravaganza Instrumental Music Concert, Wednesday, May 23 The annual Spring Extravaganza Instrumental Music Concert takes place this Wednesday, May 23. Doors open at 6:30 PM for a 7:00 PM downbeat. The concert will feature Beginning Band, Beginning Strings, Symphonic Band, Advanced Orchestra, Jazz Combo I, Jazz Combo II, Jazz Guitar Ensemble, Jazz Piano Ensemble, and Marching Band. Soloists will include graduating seniors Elida Ortiz, Seamus Masterson, and Leah Jablo. Refreshments will be available. Eagle Leader Performances: Love and Fear: TWO NIGHTS in the library!

The themes of this year’s annual Eagle Leaders Presentations are Love and Fear. Performances are on May 22 (LOVE) and May 24 (FEAR) in the Library starting at 6:00 PM. Hall Passes to Library during Class Periods Students must bring a hall pass with their names on it to use the library during regular class periods. Unless your teacher has made a prior arrangement with me, please bring a written pass from your teacher OR any substitute teachers every time. Otherwise you will be sent back to your classroom. ALAS Fest, Friday, May 11, 3:30-10:00 PM ALAS, the Association of Latin American Students, hosts its annual ALAS Fest this Friday with the theme “Ni de aquí, ni de allá” (“Neither here nor there”) as symbolized by the monarch butterfly. Students and presenters will discuss the benefits, struggles, and realities of crossing metaphoric borders as part of living in a space of dual identities. The event begins at 3:30 PM with workshops hosted by various members of the Latino community, including Jones alumni. Workshops will be followed by a showcase in the Robin Bennett Theater, featuring the many talents of Jones students. The event concludes with a delicious Mexican meal and dancing to the sounds of Latinoamérica. This event is supported by Friends of Jones and FREE for Jones students and staff! For all others the cost is $7.00. Online Media Literacy Video Series Crash Course is a free educational YouTube channel that offers “crash courses” on science, math, history, literature, philosophy, and more. A current project is a 12-week miniseries all about media literacy. The series aims to give viewers the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create, and act using all forms of communication. It’s hosted by Jay Smooth, a cultural commentator and the founder of New York City's longest-running hip hop radio program, WBAI's Underground Railroad. TEDx Youth Event at Jones, “Truth or Dare,” May 31, 5 PM Fill out this online form if you are hoping to attend the TEDxYOUTH@JCP event on Thursday, May 31st at 5 PM. Our TEDx event encompasses five different talks, sharing truths and daring you to do something about them. Tickets will be rewarded through a lottery system, as TEDx requires us to limit seats. We are so excited to share this event with you! Magnificent Dance Concert on May 2 & 3 Congratulations to the HUNDREDS of students who rocked the Robin Bennett Theatre last week!
