AAPI Month American Experience / Plague at the Golden Gate As Asian American Pacific Islander Month comes to an end, check out this fascinating documentary about an outbreak of bubonic plague in San Francisco’s Chinatown in 1900. Scapegoated as the source of the disease early on, the Chinese community fought back against unjust, discriminatory treatment. It’s a gripping story of the desperate race against time to save San Francisco and the nation from the deadly disease. It premieres on PBS on May 24. The Black Coalition is holding a “Celebrating Black Graduates” event to commemorate the success of the class of 2022 as they embark on their journeys post-graduation. The ceremony will consist of a walk across the stage, the reading of their accomplishments, and a repass with music, dancing, and a celebratory dinner. Graduates are welcome to invite guests, such as friends and family members. If you would like to volunteer for this event (mainly helping with decorations and setup the day of) please complete this form here. Volunteers will earn service hours and a free meal. The event is taking place on Thursday, June 2 from 6:00 PM. to 8:30 PM in the south auditorium and south cafeteria. If you are a 2022 graduate that identifies as Black/African American, please complete this form to ensure that you are recognized. The Coalition of Advocates for Undocumented Students’ Education (CAUSE) aims to support, empower, grow, and bring together clubs that represent undocumented students across CPS high schools. CAUSE strives to innovate constructive solutions to break down social obstacles faced by the undocumented community. CAUSE is launching its 3rd annual survey to conduct research on what kinds of school resources are provided to undocumented CPS students. The information we receive from this survey is very important to creating an agenda and plans of action for the upcoming school year. Teachers, please provide students time to complete the survey. A lot of books are getting banned lately, especially those that focus on LGBTQ youth or the impact of racism. The latest episode of Above the Noise explores the harm caused by banning these books, especially towards students who identify with the subject matter in the banned books. Censorship in Schools Check out this recent Chicago Sun-Times commentary, Censoring books is bad for students, teachers and democracy: As long-time educators, we are alarmed by the rapidly increasing political censorship in education. Check out this recent Washington Post article: Censorship battles’ new frontier: Your public library: Conservatives are teaming with politicians to remove books and gut library boards. The Tennessee House of Representatives voted on a bill recently regarding the regulation of education materials. If passed by the Senate, the procedure below will determine which books are approved or not in Tennessee schools. Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center Exhibit ends May 8, 2022 The exhibit Rise Up: Stonewall and the LGBTQ Rights Movement explores the June 1969 police raid of the Stonewall Inn as the flashpoint that ignited the modern gay rights movement in the United States. In the fifty years since the Stonewall Uprising, America’s LGBTQ+ population has struggled for equal rights and representation under the law. The content you see on a given social media app isn’t random—it’s super curated content specifically made for you per recommendation algorithms. These algorithms are designed to keep you on the social media app you are using for as long as possible by learning what you like and showing you more of that type of content.
