Jones Choir 2019 Composition Showcase The Jones Choir will give several short performances in various locations on Thursday, June 6, 5:00 - 8:00 PM. Eagle Leaders Presents Showcases Wednesday, May 29, and Friday, May 31, 6:00 PM Come see Eagle Leaders students perform monologues derived from interviews with members of the Jones community in the Jones Library. The theme of the May 29 performance is “Growing Up,” and the theme on May 31 is “Firsts.” The events runs about an hour including a brief talk back at the end. Tickets are FREE! AP Studio Art Show Friday, May 31, 3:30-4:30 PM, JCP Art Gallery (North Building, windows at State/Harrison) AP Art students have completed and submitted their portfolios and invite you to take a look at their work. Each student will display a small collection of their work, exemplifying the diversity and quality of work produced in the class. The exhibit will remain on display through June 11. Everybody, please find those books! 2019-2020 Immigrants and Refugees Booklist The African American Racial Justice Booklist has inspired much reading, learning, and discussion this year. Next year’s thematic book list will be about the experiences of immigrants and refugees. Let’s work together to curate a list of books, articles, plays, films, videos, music, and other works that point to the experiences and challenges of migrants, asylum seekers, refugees and immigrants all around the world. Please use this Google survey to suggest works for this initiative. All submissions will be considered. Multiple copies of all books on the final list will be purchased for the Jones library. There will be two performances of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream in the Robin Bennett Theatre this Friday, May 17, at 3:45 PM and 7:00 PM. Tickets cost $5 pre-sale or $6 at the door. SPRING DANCE CONCERT The JCP Spring Dance Concert is scheduled for Thursday, May 2, and Friday, May 3, at 7:00 PM in the Robin Bennett Theater. COMEDY CLUB SHOW! The Comedy Club presents “NO IDs ALLOWED” on Wednesday, May 8, at 4:00 PM in the Robin Bennett Theater. Tickets are $3.00 in advance or $4.00 at the door. Look for Comedy Club members selling tickets during lunches and in the lobby before school. Globe Trotting Eagles! Greece, China, Peru, Ecuador, Spain, and New York!! Greece Eighteen Jones students and teacher chaperones John Lund, Emlyn Ricketts, and Jonathan Smith traveled to the birthplace of democracy, Greece, for a week of cultural and historical exploration. The group went to Athens, Mykonos, Samos, Patmos, Rhodes, Crete and Santorini. China Eighteen students from Jones and Walter Payton accompanied by teacher chaperones Angela Yang (Jones) and teacher Christina Xu (Payton) traveled to four major cities in China: Beijing, Xi’an, Chengdu and Shanghai. Students climbed the legendary Great Wall, saw the world-famous Terracotta Warriors, watched adorable pandas eating and playing at the Panda Breeding Center, and visited beautiful ancient scenic towns. Travelers tasted authentic indigenous foods, visited traditional local markets, negotiated prices with vendors in Chinese, and traveled on public transportation and on foot through the crowded streets of China. Students sharpened their language skills and gained valuable insight into globalization and the ties between the United States and China. Peru Twenty-eight students accompanied by chaperones including teachers Sarah Rayski, Kim Bowman, and Eve Reineke traveled to Peru for nine days of cultural exploration. The group travelled to Lima, Cusco, and the Sacred Valley. They hiked Machu Picchu and spent a few days with the tarantulas and caiman in the Amazon rainforest. It was an amazing experience for all!! Ecuador The Ecuador trip was awesome! Twelve Jones students accompanied by teacher chaperones Eric Hancock and Michal Michniowski toured cultural sites in Quito, visited active volcanoes, toured the Amazon rainforest, visited a Kichwa community that taught them how to make cocoa, and visited a mangrove forest on the coast.
New York City Jones Choir spent four days in New York City over spring break with teacher chaperones Katie Colby, Caitriona Tobin, Ann Dernbach, and Steve Clayton. The students had an amazing time!. They attended three Broadway shows (Chicago, Wicked, and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), worked with Broadway professionals, and took in historic sights around the city including Radio City Music Hall, Lincoln Center, Ellis Island, Liberty Island, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, and Central Park.
