THIS SCHOOL YEAR EVERY WEEK IS BANNED BOOKS WEEK! Here is the latest… Maus by Art Spiegelman has been banned in curriculums in Tennessee. But here in town the Chicago Public Library has selected Maus as the 2022 One Book, One Chicago selection. Watch this 6-minute PBS Hour video: “Nationwide effort to ban books challenges freedom of speech.” WBEZ Chicago reports that “the surge in book bans is a result of a network of local political and advocacy groups targeting books with LGBTQ+ characters and storylines, and books involving characters of color.” In northwest suburban Barrington the school board voted narrowly to reject bids to remove two LGBTQ books (This Book is Gay by Juno Dawson and the graphic novel Flamer by Mike Curato) in late September. Bookriot.com reports that the City of Chicago and the Chicago Public Library (CPL) Have Declared Themselves Sanctuaries. The Chicago Tribune reports, As attempts to ban books across the country increase, Chicago establishes ‘Book Sanctuaries’: ‘Encouraging and alarming.’ Learn more about book sanctuaries and consider hosting your own. Indigenous Peoples Day, October 10, 2022 Indigenous Peoples’ Day is celebrated on the second Monday of October to honor the past, present, and future of Native peoples throughout the US. The holiday recognizes the legacy and impact of colonialism on Native communities, and it also celebrates the cultures, contributions, and resilience of contemporary Native peoples. Filipino American History Month October 2021 “Celebrating our History and Legacies: 50 Years of Filipino American Studies, 40 Years of FANHS, and 30 years of Filipino American History Month.” Filipino Americans are the second-largest Asian American group in the nation and the third-largest ethnic group in California, after Latinas/os and African Americans. The October observance commemorates the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States, which occurred on October 18, 1587, when “Luzones Indios” came ashore from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de Esperanza and landed at what is now Morro Bay, California. In 2009, U.S. Congress recognized October as Filipino American History Month in the United States. Learn more at the Filipino American National Historic Society. The National Museum of Mexican Art (1852 W. 19th St.) proudly presents Día de Muertos, Memories & Offerings. The Day of the Dead exhibition continues through Sunday, December 11th. The 36th Day of the Dead exhibition remembers numerous individuals from Mexico and the U.S. who have died from COVID and other tragedies in the last year. The museum hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 AM-5 PM. Admission is FREE. Be sure to enjoy the beautiful fall colors all around you!
