Dear Jones Community, Black History Month Showcase This Friday! Join the Black Coalition this Friday, February 25, for the annual Black History Month showcase. It will be held in the South Auditorium from 5:00 PM until 6:30 PM. A free soul food dinner will be served in the South Cafeteria at 7pm. The showcase will have performers across grade levels demonstrating their various talents to commemorate the end of Black History Month. The Black Coalition hopes you all to take the time out to support the Jones community’s Black cultural clubs this year. Parents and family members are welcome! World Read Aloud Wrap Up! Warm thanks to the fifteen JCP teachers that celebrated World Read Aloud Day on or around February 2 by reading aloud to their students. Also consider checking out elementary eBooks from the CPS Elementary Virtual Library to share at home or to share with distant loved ones using Google Meet or other virtual tools. Mask Up! The main goal of this work is to build community, to reinforce our common values, to provide a space for folks to express themselves about real life issues, and to deepen relationships with others in the community. Students and staff are welcome to use this form who want to join upcoming “drop in” talking circles before and after school. Students and staff are welcome to use this form to request a talking circle for all kinds of groups. Choice for Change is Hosting Two Events to Support Deborah's Place and Sister House, Two Local Women's Shelters Choice for Chance x Jewelry Club is hosting a pop-up shop to support Sister House during ac lab periods for two weeks starting February 15. They will be selling bracelets, earrings, and rings, so make sure to stop by to pick yourself up a piece in the south lobby! If you are not interested in acquiring a piece of jewelry, please check out our Go Fund Me to directly donate to the cause. Choice for Change is also hosting a drive for Deborah's Place over the upcoming two weeks. See the flyer attached for details on what you can (ex: non-perishable foods, house goods, etc.) donate! ATTN: Sophomores and Juniors interested in NHS 2022-2023 In the 2022-2023 school year, required volunteer hours must be completed and submitted to counselors by late September. That means that most rising juniors (Class of ‘24) and rising seniors (Class of ‘23) have to earn volunteer hours this semester and over the summer to be eligible for NHS membership next fall. Best Teen Critiques of Creative Expression in The New York Times The Winners of Our Seventh Annual Student Review Contest: Read critical commentary by teenagers on “West Side Story,” Crumbl Cookies, Baby Keem’s new album and more. This annual Review Contest, which invites students to play critic and submit original reviews about any kind of creative expression covered in The New York Times, provides a glimpse into the art, culture and technology young people are loving — or loathing. International Holocaust Rembembrance Day, January 27, 2022 The UN General Assembly designated January 27, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The UN urges every member state to honor the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism and to develop educational programs to help prevent future genocides. Book Ban Efforts Spread Across the U.S.: Challenges to books about sexual and racial identity are nothing new in American schools, but the tactics and politicization are by Elizabeth A. Harris and Alexandra Alter It is not Banned Books Week, but this school year has been noteworthy for an increase in book challenges in the United States by parents, activists, school board officials and lawmakers around the country; novel tactics; and challenges in a wider range of settings. Among the most frequent targets are books about race, gender and sexuality. Related to the freedom to read, this New York Times article reports that the Pulitzer-Prize winning graphic novel Maus by Art Spiegelman about the Holocaust has been banned by a Tennessee school district. AP Resource Project Survey! Fiction Readers Wanted for Brief Survey Do you love to read fiction? Has fiction enriched your inner world and/or brought you a comforting distraction during a rough patch? Are you currently at least halfway through a self-selected fictional novel? If so, please consider helping out Joanna Soltys, a Jones senior taking AP Research this year. Inspired by her passion for fictional worlds, Joanna created a survey to see if someone’s motivation for reading fiction affects the benefits they receive from it. If you plan on reading today or sometime this week, please take 4-8 minutes to answer these questions before and after you read. The survey is confidential, and all responses will remain anonymous with the exception of those that choose to provide their email for a potential follow-up interview.
