Immigrants & Refugees Booklist The Unwanted: Stories of the Syrian Refugees Written and illustrated by Don Brown The heartbreaking graphic narrative of the Syrian refugee crisis of The Unwanted is told through a series of vignettes drawn from real refugee experiences. Readers are led from the war-torn landscape of Syria to the arduous and sometimes futile pursuit of exile, meeting the young and the old, the asylum-seekers and those who deny them. The Unwanted is a moving chronicle of a present-day humanitarian tragedy that has displaced 13.5 people and driven 5 million refugees out of Syria. For an unflinching look at the Syrian Civil War, consider the documentary For Sama, available for streaming by Frontline/PBS. Graphic novel readers, consider also Don Brown’s Drowned City: Hurricane Katrina & New Orleans and The Great American Dust Bowl, both of which also tell stories of human displacement. Immigrant Students at Jones / CPS Lives / Eileen Ryan Photography Eileen Ryan is a local photographer who contributes to CPS Lives, an organization that links Chicago artists, designers, creatives, thinkers, makers, and educators to tell compelling stories about what’s happening in Chicago Public Schools. Ms. Ryan proposes to shoot portraits of Jones students who are immigrants, the children or immigrants, or immigrant allies for an exhibit. The shoots would be done at school in mid-March during lunch periods. Related to this, Jones students who are immigrants or the children of immigrants are invited to share their stories at a special event at Jones this spring. Students interested in one or both of these projects should reach out to school librarian Mr. Feeley for much more information about these artistic and educational opportunities.
