The event highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community - librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers - in shared support of the freedom to seek and express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. Click here to explore the Top Ten Challenged Books of 2016 including a video, talking points, and infographics. Click here and here for additional lists of frequently challenged books. Be sure to check out the Banned Books Week display outside the main entrance of the library. The work is a 144-page graphic novel that “follows the neighborhood adventures of teens in Chicago's past, present and future as they wrestle with designing the city they want, need and deserve.” The work doesn’t shy away from challenging topics including institutional racism, gentrification, and displacement. Learn more about this exciting new work and its connection to civic engagement at the CAF website and in this New Yorker story. Come check out a copy today! The Black Star Project Recently I signed up to receive routine emails from The Black Star Project, a Chicago non-profit, action-based organization that provides educational services to improve the lives of less-advantaged Black communities and to close the racial academic achievement gap. The organization offers local academic, parent, and mentoring programs and participates in national initiatives as well. The emails include informative and thought-provoking articles from a wide range of publications. Interested students, teachers, and parents, consider signing up here to receive this valuable information. School Libraries in Chicago Public Schools The state of affairs in school libraries in CPS is bleak. Read this September 4, 2017 Chicago Tribune article entitled, “Information literacy lost: Most CPS schools no longer have librarians.” The article reports that approximately 70% of CPS library positions have been cut since 2013. Coonley Elementary School Librarian Nora Wiltse offers compelling arguments for the need for libraries in all CPS schools. CPS librarian Sara Sayigh of the multiple-campus DuSable campus stopped by the Jones library yesterday with former students after the students testified at a City Council meeting to advocate for her reinstatement after being laid off again. Learn more about her story here, here, and here. If you think this state of affairs is unacceptable consider expressing your views to decision makers. Media Literacy/Professional Community
