Dear Jones Students! The Immigrants & Refugees Booklist Titles and Lots of Other Great New Reads! The second annual JCP School Library thematic booklist focuses on the plight of immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in the world today. Copies of the booklist titles have arrived! Explore and check out...
Students are volunteering to read a book from the list and create a 2-3 minute podcast about the book to inspire others to read it. Please stop by if you want to read a book and make a podcast on your own or with a friend! I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Sánchez The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian meets Jane the Virgin in this poignant but often laugh-out-loud funny contemporary young adult novel about losing a sister and finding yourself amid the pressures, expectations, and stereotypes of growing up in a Mexican-American home. Set in Chicago and written by local author Erika L. Sánchez, this work is already striking a deep chord at Jones. The Immigrants & Refugees initiative will include a number of special events including a student field trip to a performance of the stage adaptation of this book at Steppenwolf Theater on March 20 and an author visit by Ms. Sánchez on March 26. Book Clubs Starting Soon Jones College Prep hosts four Book Clubs, one per grade level. Each group meets four times per year for book discussions. The clubs are moderated by teachers from multiple departments. The freshman, sophomore, and junior book clubs are getting together for a short meeting in the school library at 3:30 PM, this coming Tuesday, September 24, to sign up and check out the first books of the year. Interested seniors please reach out directly to social sciences teacher Ms. Jennie Harned at [email protected]. Summer Book Checkout was a huge success! Hundreds of books were checked out to students for summer reading. All summer checkouts were due on Monday, September 9. Please return your summer reads for others to check out or explore options to renew your books here. The Very Hungry Stingray The yet unnamed stingray in the library fish tank is fed two live worms daily by Jones students, sometimes commanding a crowd! Law teacher Ms. Ricketts recently established that the stingray is a female, just in time for an upcoming “Name the Stingray” effort. Thanks to Manny Onate - Jones parent and Jones Class of ‘76 - for his ongoing effort to develop and maintain beautiful aquariums at Jones! Our Voices. Nuestras Voces.
