September 22, 2017 Dear Jones Students, Jones Book Clubs The organizational meeting for all Jones Book Clubs will take place in the library this coming Wednesday, September 27, at 3:30 PM in the school library. Grouped by grade, the four book clubs meet four times per year for book discussions. The clubs are moderated by teachers from multiple departments. The program owns sets of all the titles. The event highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community - librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers - in shared support of the freedom to seek and express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. Click here to explore the Top Ten Challenged Books of 2016 including a video, talking points, and infographics. Click here and here for additional lists of frequently challenged books. Be sure to check out the Banned Books Week display outside the main entrance of the library. New Online Database STATISTA The school library has purchased a subscription to STATISTA, a statistics database that provides access to more than 1,500,000 statistics about 80,000 topics from more than 18,000 sources. STATISTA has great potential to be very useful across all disciplines. Searches provide hits to a wide range of content types in a range of downloadable formats. Multiple citation styles are also provided. Type in ANYTHING and you are likely to find interesting and informative results, including what you are looking for and often fascinating and unexpected related items. Link to STATISTA from this page of the library website and access the Jones USERNAME and PASSWORD here. No Small Plans The Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) has generously donated 31 copies of its recent publication No Small Plans by Gabrielle Lyon (writer & editor) to the Jones school library. The work is a 144-page graphic novel that “follows the neighborhood adventures of teens in Chicago's past, present and future as they wrestle with designing the city they want, need and deserve.” The work doesn’t shy away from challenging topics including institutional racism, gentrification, and displacement. Learn more about this exciting new work and its connection to civic engagement at the CAF website and in this New Yorker story. Come check out a copy today! The organization offers local academic, parent, and mentoring programs and participates in national initiatives as well. The emails include informative and thought-provoking articles from a wide range of publications. Interested students, teachers, and parents, consider signing up here to receive this valuable information.
