October 31, 2017 Spooky Halloween Edition!!! Dear Jones Students, HALLOWEEN FUN!! Media Literacy Week Media Literacy Week, hosted by the National Association for Media Literacy Education, is designed to raise the visibility of the importance and power of media literacy education and its essential role in education today. The Jones School Library is hosting three initiatives. 1. Tuesday, November 7; 3:30 PM, Library Room 3030C Film Screening and Discussion: The 22-minute film This is Media provides a fresh look at our role in today’s media landscape as consumers and makers. It includes compelling interviews with digital pioneers and reveals the balancing act between being connected, responsible, and private. 2. Wednesday, November 8; 3:30 PM, Library Room 3030C Checkology: Produced by the News Literacy Project, the Checkology virtual classroom is an innovative space where students discover how to effectively navigate today's challenging information landscape and master tools to interpret the news and information that shape their lives so they can make informed decisions. Come to this event to obtain your own Checkology account and explore! 3. ALL WEEK Students are invited all week (and all year!) to submit their media creations by using this simple online form. Links to those student media creations will be available for others to explore on ths Student Media Page of the library website. Food Policy Change Effective immediately the consequences for violations of the food policy will be removal from the library and THREE DETENTIONS for students of all class years. MUCH simpler, right? Read the adjusted food policy here. New Books A great new shipment of books arrived last week! Many of them are on display outside the main entrance of the library. CPL 1st Saturdays Chicago Public Library hosts the monthly series 1st Saturdays: Careers in Focus, where teens network with industry professionals to find out how they developed their careers and honed their skills to be at the top of their industries. The next event in the series focuses on Careers in the Visual Arts on Saturday, November 11, 12 PM - 4PM. The complete schedule of 1st Saturdays: Careers in Focus and links to registration can be accessed HERE. Mark your calendars now! Then They Came for Me: Incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII and the Demise of Civil Liberties is on exhibit through November 19, 2017, at the Alphawood Gallery (2401 North Halsted Street, Chicago).
