School Libraries in Chicago Public Schools The state of affairs in school libraries in CPS is bleak. Read this September 4, 2017 Chicago Tribune article entitled, “Information literacy lost: Most CPS schools no longer have librarians.” The article reports that approximately 70% of CPS library positions have been cut since 2013. Coonley Elementary School Librarian Nora Wiltse offers compelling arguments for the need for libraries in all CPS schools. CPS librarian Sara Sayigh of the multiple-campus DuSable campus stopped by the Jones library yesterday with former students after the students testified at a City Council meeting to advocate for her reinstatement after being laid off again. Learn more about her story here, here, and here. If you think this state of affairs is unacceptable consider expressing your views to decision makers. Media Literacy/Professional Community
Last Friday I gave a presentation to CPS librarians entitled, “Media Literacy Resources and Lesson Plans for Grades K-12.” Embedded in it is a lengthy list of resources about media literacy and civic engagement. Check them out! Great to see all of you this week! Mr. Feeley P.S. All the student email blasts from the library will be permanently posted on the News/Blog page of the library website.
