Banned Books Week 2022, September 18-24, 2022 The American Library Association reports that books for children and young adults containing themes of race, gender and sexual identity received an “unprecedented” number of challenges in 2021. Book challenges quadrupled in 2021. Couple this with the recent attack on teachers and attacks on school libraries, and it raises the question: what rights do students actually have to access books? Banned Books Week is the annual celebration of the freedom to read. Check out the Banned Books Week website hosted by the American Library Association Office for Intellectual Freedom in partnership with the Banned Books Week Coalition. Keep it coming, everybody! New Books Fall 2022 Click to explore the most recently arrived titles in the library! Also check out a wide range of book lists based on identities, themes, interests. Find many paths to books on the Books Page of the Library Website to identify great print books, eBooks and eAudiobooks. LOTS OF YOU checked out books last spring to read over the summer. I hope you enjoyed them. Please continue to return them to the library. Loan Period and No Fines Policy The loan period for print books is three weeks, but please don’t stress about it. Please take your time and return books once you have finished reading them. If you have one or more books checked out that are no longer calling your name, please return them. If they appealed to you, I am sure they will appeal to other readers, too. Immersive Reader Available as a Google Extension Immersive Reader is a free tool that uses proven techniques to improve reading for people regardless of their age or ability. Click to add the Immersive Reader as a Google Extension to your CPS Google Account. Vogels, Risa Gelles-Watnick & Navid Massarat, August 22, 2022, Pew Research Center Columbia Votes! Voter Registration Drive September 20, 2022 The Jones Library is hosting a Voter Registration Drive with Columbia College’s Columbia Votes! program. Students who are 18 years old or who will be 18 by Illinois’ election day on November 8 can register to vote. Students of all ages are welcome to create simple 'zines that express their feelings and views about the importance of voting and the right to vote. Students can choose to display their 'zines in the school library after the event. The voter registration drive will take place on Tuesday, September 20, in the MAIN LOBBY from 10:30 AM to 12:35 PM and 1:50 PM to 4:00 PM. Folks who register must show their driver's license number, State ID card number, OR the last 4 digits of their social security number. The 2022 Pulitzer Center Letter-Writing Contest! An important predisposition for media literate citizens is engaging in self-expression, which is essential for citizens in a democracy. Make your voice heard this fall by writing a letter to a local elected representative that explains the global issue you want them to prioritize, shows how it connects to your local community, and proposes a solution. Through this contest, students can practice global citizenship, civic action, and persuasive writing, all while exploring the underreported issues that matter to them through Pulitzer Center news stories. National Honor Society / Summer Hours Due September 23
All students who earned volunteer hours or service hours over the summer must submit documentation of those hours to their counselors by September 23. Summer hours submitted after the September 23 deadline will be cut in half. September 23 is also the deadline for current juniors and seniors applying to the National Honor Society to submit their hours to the counselors. Please submit your documentation immediately!
