May 4, 2022 Dear Jones Community, May is Asian American and Pacific Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. Explore ways to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in Chicago. Censorship in Schools Check out this recent Chicago Sun-Times commentary, Censoring books is bad for students, teachers and democracy: As long-time educators, we are alarmed by the rapidly increasing political censorship in education. You should be, too by Gina Caneva and Rebecca Woodard. Check out this recent Washington Post article: Censorship battles’ new frontier: Your public library: Conservatives are teaming with politicians to remove books and gut library boards. The Tennessee House of Representatives voted on a bill recently regarding the regulation of education materials. If passed by the Senate, the procedure below will determine which books are approved or not in Tennessee schools. Read more here and here. “Requires the Commission to issue a list of approved educational materials and books that may be made available to students in a library operated by a local education agency by Dec. 1st, 2022, and to update the list by Apr. 1st each year thereafter. ALAS FEST! Friday, May 6, 6:00 PM After a two year hiatus, the Association of Latin American Students is excited to present Jones' annual ALAS Fest. Join us to celebrate latinidad centered around the theme of ‘Healing, Strength, and Hope.' The night will include a showcase with performances from Folklórico and Mariachi Águilas as well as the talents of the greater student body. Afterwards, eating and dancing will take place in the cafeteria. National Honor Society IN-PERSON Vitalant Blood Drive, Wednesday, May 18, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM in the Harrison Foyer (B-Day) Jones staff and students are welcome to make blood donations. Appointments are required. Blood donations are expected to take an hour long, so please plan accordingly. Communicate with your teachers to be excused from class. Blood donations can be scheduled during AcLab that day. Students ages 16 and up are eligible to donate. Students age 16 have to submit a parent permission form to donate. The permission form (in English and Spanish) and a lot of other valuable information about preparing for your donation can be found in this folder. Sanchez’ and adapted to the stage by Isaac Gómez, the play is approximately 115 minutes long. The audio provides closed captions in English and Spanish, ASL interpretation, and title cards with scene numbers to help you keep track of where you are in the play. Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center Exhibit ends May 8, 2022 The exhibit Rise Up: Stonewall and the LGBTQ Rights Movement explores the June 1969 police raid of the Stonewall Inn as the flashpoint that ignited the modern gay rights movement in the United States. In the fifty years since the Stonewall Uprising, America’s LGBTQ+ population has struggled for equal rights and representation under the law. The content you see on a given social media app isn’t random—it’s super curated content specifically made for you per recommendation algorithms. These algorithms are designed to keep you on the social media app you are using for as long as possible by learning what you like and showing you more of that type of content. But is this always a good thing? Myles Bess explores how these recommendation algorithms can help you feel seen and build community while also potentially trapping you in filter bubbles where you are only served content that reinforces what you believe. Steppenwolf's Young Adult Council (YAC) serves as a home for teen arts learners, makers, and appreciators who are passionate, curious and interested in theatre.
