May 25, 2022 Dear Jones Community Farewell to the Class of 2022! Be yourself. Love yourself. Be kind to others. Do your best. JCP Library SUMMER Checkout! Underclassmen, please plan on checking out books for the summer break! Explore the Books Page of the JCP Library website, explore titles in the Jones Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC), and/or stop by the library any time. I will be glad to identify great books for you to read over the summer. Seniors, thanks for returning your books! PERMISSION SLIPS and APPLICATIONS and WAIVERS, oh, my! Lots of you struggle to print out permission slips, applications, and waivers. LET ME KNOW when there is a form that other folks will need. I will gladly make copies so students can swing by quickly and grab a copy from my desk. This is much more efficient than printing them out individually. Why struggle? Media Literacy Book List I am attending a six-day Media Literacy bootcamp this summer. I’m leaning in to more media literacy instruction and resources in the coming year. I intend to dedicate my annual booklist to the concept of Media Literacy. Please submit suggestions for books, essays, articles, documentaries, films, organizations, events, media literacy leaders, and anything else that relates to media literacy. AAPI Month American Experience / Plague at the Golden Gate As Asian American Pacific Islander Month comes to an end, check out this fascinating documentary about an outbreak of bubonic plague in San Francisco’s Chinatown in 1900. Scapegoated as the source of the disease early on, the Chinese community fought back against unjust, discriminatory treatment. It’s a gripping story of the desperate race against time to save San Francisco and the nation from the deadly disease. It premieres on PBS on May 24. A lot of books are getting banned lately, especially those that focus on LGBTQ youth or the impact of racism. The latest episode of Above the Noise explores the harm caused by banning these books, especially towards students who identify with the subject matter in the banned books. Watch the video and join the discussion. For a youth perspective on the issue, check out high school student Vanessa L.’s Perspective piece “Stop Book Banning” where she points out the double-standard apparent in many institutions which ban books. Just a few more weeks, y’all! Hang in there!
